Central Catholic angler Austin Aikins hooks scholarship offer

Austin Aikins is quite a talented fisherman.

He’s known around Central Catholic as the “Fish Whisperer.”

Aikins, a senior, has introduced many friends to the sport, some of whom just happen to be a few of the top football players in the WPIAL.

“A.J. Beatty really wants to go ice fishing with me. The Allen twins want me to take them fishing, too,” said Aikins, who played freshman football and is also on the wrestling team.

For Aikins, fishing isn’t just a hobby. It could pay for his college and he might make a career out of it.

Aikins was offered a scholarship by national power Bethel University after a strong performance at the Big Bass Junior Championship on Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho, on Oct. 19. Bethel, located in McKenzie, Tenn., has won the past two Collegiate Bass Fishing National Championships.

If you didn’t know, yes, bass fishing is a college sport. It’s becoming increasingly popular and is especially a big deal in the south. It’s not affiliated with the NCAA, so athletes can pocket winnings from events and secure sponsorships, a good thing considering Aikins already has four of them (Picasso Lures, Allegheny Angler, Lock 3 Bait & Tackle and MVW Nutritionals)….Full Story
