Blissfield bass fishers awarded as anglers of the year, prepare for state championships

BLISSFIELD — This Saturday and Sunday two Blissfield High School bass fishers will be taking to Lake St. Clair and competing in the two-day high school state championship bass tournament.

Competing for the state championship alone is something to be proud of, but Cade Hayford and Waylon Rickard head into next weekend’s tournament already bringing some extra hardware with them into their fishing boat.

The duo, who have been fishing partners for around four years, were recently named the 2019 Michigan High School Bass Nation Anglers of the Year. The unofficial award was presented to the young men July 21 at the conclusion of the bass nation tournament high school team trials. The presentation of the official Anglers of the Year award will come during this weekend’s state championship.

“Its very, very awesome for us,” said Rickard of being named angler of the year. “It’s the coolest thing we have ever won.”

It’s no small feat to earn the title of Angler of the Year. With the successful growth of bass fishing over the years, the number of participants in the sport continues to grow as well. More than 300 anglers have taken to the waters of Michigan this season and have competed in any one of the tournaments….Full Story
