Cabela’s donates rods, reels to Monroe HS Fishing Club

DUNDEE — Cabela’s is known to most as a sporting goods supplier but, for the Monroe High School Fishing Club, it’s now a whole lot more.

The Dundee location of the sporting goods super store gave dozens of rods and reels to the team as part of Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s plan to donate 50,000 rods and reels to kids across the country as part of the company’s “Gone Fishing” movement.

“Gone Fishing,” Dundee Cabela’s Assistant General Manager Kim Huk said, is part of the company’s push to get kids out into nature, especially during the summer.

“It’s a dream of (Bass Pro Shops founder) Johnny Morris,” she said. “Get them to put the electronics down and enjoy the outside.”

The rod donation was especially meaningful to the Monroe club, which just formed this school year. For some of the students involved, the rod they received from Cabela’s is their first. Many of the club members didn’t fish before discovering the club.

The club is competing in its first tournament today, June 9, and plans more going forward.
