2 more Polk high school fishing teams qualify for nationals

Sammy Jay Acree had a monster 9.17-pound fish at the Florida BASS Nation High School state championship on the Kissimmee Chain recently, but it wasn’t enough for the win.

He and Lake Wales High teammate Billy Campbell suffered a half-pound dead-fish penalty on Day 1 after a 45-minute rain delay and fell just 0.06 pounds shy of the tournament winners with 44.19 pounds over two days May 4-5. The second-place finish was still enough to qualify for the Bassmaster High School Series National Championship, along with McKeel Academy duo Fisher Cusic and Zachary Tyler.
