Gilbert anglers win high school World Finals

GILBERT DUO WINS NATIONAL TITLE IN HIGH SCHOOL FISH ANGLING

The town of Gilbert is now home to a pair of national champion high school fish anglers.

Tucker Veronee of Gilbert High School and Landon Gramling of Lexington won the 11th annual Student Angler Federation High School Fish School Fishing World Finals on June 27 in LaCrosse, Wisc.

The duo from Gilbert Bass Club bested a field of 312, 2-person teams from 39 states to claim the trophy with a 11-pound, 9 ounce limit.

“We’ve been friends a long time and it means a lot to us to win this together,” Veronee said.

“Our dads are boat captains and they put everything into supporting us,” Gramling said. “I can’t thank them enough.”

The pair overcame a share of challenges fishing along the Mississippi River.

“In practice we hit a wing dam and busted up our skeg,” Gramling said. “We got that fixed but then our trolling motor quit on us an hour and a half into the first day of the tournament. With all the current, that was really tough. Without our shallow-water anchor I don’t think we would have caught anything.”…Full Story
