Seventeen-year-old Caleb Barrow, a senior at Grovetown High School, on Thursday became the second Augusta area youth fishing team member to be awarded a college bass fishing scholarship.

Barrow will bass fish competitively in Brewton-Parker College’s 2-year-old coed program, said Steve Birchfield, the fishing team’s coach. The college is located in Mount Vernon, Ga.

There are 15 anglers including one woman on the Barons’ fishing team, added Birchfield, who also is an associate men’s basketball coach. The fishing team competes on the ABAC Fall Fishing, Boat USA, FLW (Southern Division) and Bass Anglers Sportsman Society Open trails.

The small college program provides full funding to fishing team members in the way of expenses and fuel for their boats.

The teen, who dreams of becoming a professional bass fisherman, said he was first contacted by the college’s admissions counselor, then was introduced to the coach and visited the campus. “It was a great fit for me,” Barrow said. “I really appreciate this opportunity and thank my parents and family members and everybody’s support.”…Full Story
