Iola team competes in high school bass tournaments

Iola fishing team competes locally

Jaggar Vaughn came to Iola High School having competed for a bass fishing team at a previous school.

Now, the senior is founder and president of the Iola bass fishing team, which competes in the Houston Division of the Texas High School Bass Association.

Vaughn, junior Jacob Salvato and senior Kaiden Halley, all of whom play baseball, are on the team.

“We haven’t had too much luck,” Salvato said. “It’s still fun for us to get out there.”

Salvato said he fishes a lot with his father and grandparents. He joined the team when he learned about it, because he said, “That sounded very interesting to me.”

During tournaments Salvato and Vaughn form a team in the Vaughn family boat, whose captain is Vaughn’s father, Brandon. Halley represents a second Iola team in a separate boat that is captained by his grandfather.

Vaughn and Salvato have competed in the Houston Division’s four tournaments thus far. They often don’t have fishing practice as a team but do fish on their own. Sometimes, though, Vaughn said they will go to the lake where a tournament will be and “pre-fish, try to see what the fish are biting.”…Full Story
