FINDING LESSONS IN FISHING
For these Mount Zion third-graders, lesson is about more than fish
MOUNT ZION — James Douglass, 8, set his sights on catching a blue gill in the Fletcher Park fishing pond using what he learned during his physical education class earlier in the day.
“I just like the color of them,” he said. The species typically have deep blue and purple coloring, combined with a fiery orange or yellow belly.
Blue gills are one of several species that inhabit the pond, where Sheri Schorfheide’s third grade class spent Thursday instead of their usual gym class at Mount Zion Grade School.
“This is the first year we’ve ever done this,” said physical education teacher Greg Blakey. “My big thing is getting kids outside and away from technology and enjoy being outdoors.”
