North Boone hauls in IHSA Sectional fishing championship at Rock Cut

ROCKFORD – Missing out on school to go fishing paid off for some Stateline students Monday.

The IHSA Sectional Bass Fishing Tournament was held on Pierce Lake at Rock Cut State Park. 26 boats of teams from 15 area high schools hit the water. They had from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. to try to land some quality bass. At the end of the day the team with the five largest bass would win the team championship. The teams were also vying to see which team could bring in the largest single bass.

Both honors went to the final team to weigh-in North Boone boat one. THe foursome of Kamil Walker, Nicholas Knabe, Ryan Skinner and Hayden Brown had a five fish total of 19.21 pounds. That easily topped the field. Knabe caught the biggest fish. It weighed 5.42 pounds.

“It was tough (at first),” said Knabe. “We got a few this morning right away and then halfway through the day around like twelve we switched out and that’s when the big ones starting biting. We got lucky. It was a good tournament.”

The victory earns North Boone’s team a trip to the state tournament May 18-19 at downstate Carlyle Lake. “It’s nice going to state this year because it’s my senior year and I hope we do good but it’s going to be tough. There’s a lot of good anglers out there,” says Knabe.

Teams from Stillman Valley (Pierce Knarr, Tyler Carow, Payton Olson) and Belvidere North (Issac Hernandez, Justin Kloc) also qualified for state by finishing second and third….See Video
