Ozark pair wins youth fishing tournament on Stockton
With a four-fish haul of 13.37 pounds, Ryan Persson and Sean McKiernan of Ozark were crowned state bass fishing champions of the National Youth Fishing Association Missouri State Tournament Sunday, June 17, at Stockton Lake.
“It was a tough day with some mishaps, but we ended up being able to pull it through with some big fish later in the day,” McKiernan said. “We filled most of our limit actually in the morning on topwater, and then he [Persson] capitalized on a nice fish on a deep-diving crankbait off the point, so that really helped us out.”
More than half of their total came from the big bass of the day, a 6.89-pound lunker which earned Persson and McKiernan a $100 gift card to tourney sponsor Lew’s, to go with the $1,000 in scholarship money they each won for first place.
“I was just reeling my crankbait along, taking it across the bottom and it was just a hard thump,” Persson said, “and I was like, ‘Oh, this is real, I gotta get that fish in,’ and it jumped right into the net.”
