Rhea County High freshmen took third in Bassmaster High School Classic


For Andon Goins and Blake Wheat, two freshmen members of the Rhea County High School (RCHS) Eagle Angler fishing team, going fishing has been a part of their lives since an early age, as both credit their dads and grandfathers for teaching them the finer points of the pastime.

On Saturday, March 7, the duo ventured to Lay Lake, in Birmingham, Alabama, to put their skills and passion to the test, as they competed in the Bassmaster High School Classic. By day’s end, Goins and Wheat walked onto the Bassmaster stage for the weigh-in with their haul of 13 pounds, five ounces worth of bass to secure a third-place finish for the day’s work.

Prior to participating in the elite tournament last Saturday, which only consisted of 12 handpicked high school teams from across the country by B.A.S.S. tournament director, Hank Weldon, the pair of Eagle Anglers discussed in a sit-down interview with The Herald-News what the special opportunity meant to them, especially as freshmen just now starting their high school careers….Full Story
