Local student reel in big prize

Two local high school students placed in the Bassmaster High School National Championship in Paris, Tennessee, on the Kentucky Lake this month.

Gaige Blanton from Central High School in St. Joseph and Riley Merrow from East Buchanan High School in Gower placed 11th out of 337 bass fishing teams.

The team weighed-in seven fish for a total weight of 25 pounds and 5 ounces. The event was held from Aug. 2 through Aug. 4.

Blanton said the two friends met on social media and they’ve been a fishing team for two seasons.

“This was the first championship that we’ve been part of,” Blanton said. “It’s the first chance we’ve had to make it to the championship.”

The team used Magnum Trick Worm as bait during the catch-and-release tournament.

“We find it to be a very effective bait and it caught some large fish,” Blanton said. “The second day of the tournament we had a great day. We stayed on one spot the whole day and we ended up catching five fish for a weigh-in of 18 pounds and 4 ounces including a 7 pounder.”

The team was awarded $1,000 in scholarship funds for placing in the tournament….Full Story
