OUTDOOR BRIEFS: High schoolers reel in record sack in SETX qualifier

On April 14, Hamshire-Fannett sophomores Trent Buchholz and Grady Doucet reeled in a new Southeast Texas High School Fishing Association record five-fish limit weighing 30.06 pounds to win the Ford SETX Champions Series High School bass tournament held on Sam Rayburn.

The whopper limit was anchored by a pair of giants weighing 10.66 and nine pounds. The previous circuit record of 25.48 pounds was set in Feb. 2015 by Hunter Martindale and Chase Webb of Jasper.

The anglers reported catching their fish on Carolina rigs, frogs and jerk baits fished in relation to brush and creek channels in water ranging 2-15 feet deep.

Second place went to Vance Moore and Korbin Winckler, also representing Hamshire-Fannett, with 23.27 pounds. Jack Tindel and Collin Curry of Little Cypress-Mauriceville finished third with 21.87.
