UHS fishing duo ranked first in state

Head coach Nelson Lafever knew that success would come when Upperman High School began its brand new fishing program last year.
It would just be a matter of time. He wanted to build the program the right way, while also bring some much-needed attention to the sport at the high school level.
But the success has come, maybe, even quicker than Lafever thought possible. Halfway through their second season, the Bees have two teams ranked regionally and the top-ranked team in the state.
“We’re doing so much better than I ever thought we could do (in only our second season),” Lafever said. “Brady (Lafever and Nelson’s son) and Carter (Walker) are ranked first in the state and, team-wise, I thought we’ve done very well.”
The Bees, competing under the governing body of the North Central Tennessee Bass Nation High School Division, have been impressive so far this year. They have competed in three regional tournaments and three states tournaments.
At Dale Hollow Lake, Upperman had one team in the top 10 and at Center Hill the Bees had teams finish second and fifth. UHS also did well at Old Hickory Lake.
“So far this year, I think you could say we’ve over-achieved,” coach Lafever said. “I think the boys have worked hard and I think Brady and Carter have a year’s experience under their belts.”…Full Story
